Portrait of the Remonstrant preacher Jan Uytenbogaert (1557-1644) , seated at a table above an open book. Etching by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) , after his own design. Originally made in Amsterdam in 1635. The copy offered here is a slightly later print of the original plate, ca. 1795. Printed on scooped paper. Good to very good condition. Beautiful print. Due to the oval shape of the print, the margins are somewhat short at the center of the edges. Paper slightly dirty. Verso: blank, with some remnants of an earlier confirmation. Catalog references: - Bartsch 279 - New Hollstein 153, sixth state of nine. Origin: - private collection Netherlands, previously acquired from art dealership Rembrandt-Art. With certificate of authenticity. Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden, 1606 - Amsterdam, 1669) is one of the most famous artists in the world. His unparalleled mastery of light and dark made him world famous. His fame as an etcher is at least as great. This can also be clearly seen in the etching offered here. The person portrayed has been captured very beautifully and vividly. The smooth lines of the etching are Rembrandt at his best! Johannes Uyttenbogaert, also spelled 'Wtenbogaert', (Utrecht, 1557 – The Hague, 1644) was a Dutch preacher and prose writer from the Golden Age. Uyttenbogaert was an important ecclesiastical figure in his time. Not only was he court chaplain to Prince Maurits, he was also a leader in the submission of the Remonstrance of 1610. One of the points of the protest document that was submitted to the States General was that diversity in religious views should be possible. During the Twelve Years' Truce he fell into disgrace. After the capture of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt in 1618, he fled the country. In 1626, after the death of Prince Maurits, he returned to the Netherlands, where he again became a minister. He died at the age of 87 in The Hague. See also the scans. Insured shipping with DHL Express.
