unsigned. The paper has the same chain line structure as the example in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam. Literature: Bartsch/Hollstein 79, New Hollstein 196 first state (of three): before the addition of the two dots upper centre below the plate mark. Rembrandt seems to have depicted the conversation between Christ and the two criminals. The "bad" criminal mocks Christ, while the "good" one confesses his guilt and is forgiven by Christ (Luke 23:39-43). At the foot of the cross sit the three Marys: the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the wife of Clopas.
