“In Lohse’s work, the colours used are free of any psychological or associative burden. Each element is identical with its colour, and each colour with its element. Rhythm arises through repetition. The individual element is controllable and constitutes a measurable unit. Standardisation leads to the group, yet the group in its structure remains equivalent to the individual element. Harry Szeemann wrote that viewing a work by Lohse unfolds in three phases: “the eye is initially drawn by the richness of colour forms; then comes the process of laying bare, and finally the restoration of visual unity, informed by an understanding of the picture’s mechanics”.
