Robert Adam, F.R.S., F.S.A., British 1728-1792- River landscape with a castle on an escarpment; pen and brown ink, wash, and watercolour on paper, 20 x 31.5 cm. Provenance: With Martyn Gregory, London.; With Aitken Dott & Son, Edinburgh [no.4867] (according to the labels attached to the reverse of the frame).; Private Collection, UK. Note: In 1854, Adam embarked on a five year Grand Tour of Italy and France. Whilst on his travels he studied the classical architecture and ruins of these countries which were ultimately to have a lasting influence on his own architecture. The present work resembles several of Adam's works held in the Tate Collections (no.T09843/ no.T08579/ no.T08192).
