Original unpublished typescript screenplay/novel, titled ‘The Beloved Philanderer. (A romance of the Four Great Loves of Robert Burns.) California: [c. 1940]. Quarto (11 x 8 ½ inches; 280 x 215mm). Pp. [i, 1-]2-216, 216a-216d, 217-359, [a half-sheet insert ‘402’], 360-428. Copy typescript printed recto only, with numerous deletions and autograph manuscript additions. Although the typescript has the ‘Received’ ink stamp of the ‘Screenwriter’s Guild of the Author’s League of America, it reads more like an historical novel than a script”: ‘a romance’ interspersed with liberal helpings of Burns’s poetry (Watson translates some of Burns’ harder words to ensure that his American employers can understand what Burns was writing about.).
