Robert Streatfield, British 1786-1852- Nassau; watercolour on paper, inscribed 'NASSAU.' (on the mount), further inscribed 'Nassau' (on the reverse), 9.2 x 14.3 cm., (unframed). Provenance: Collection of William Drummond.; Private Collection, UK. Note: A similarly sized watercolour by Streatfield, 'A Man Gazing over a Wide View of Laurensburg', and likewise having belonged to William Drummond, entered the Tate Collection in 1988 [T05469]. For further comparison, see Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 7 December 2016, lots 145-151 inclusive. Streatfield joined the navy at the age of 13, attaining the rank of commander by the end of the Napoleonic Wars. As a naval officer he received instruction in draftsmanship for the purposes of preparing charts and keeping up the log book. He also would have been required to draw views of ports and fortifications for tactical purposes.
