Roman Bronze Crossbow Fibula

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderfully cast-bronze fibula brooch, in a shape of a crossbow. The head is a wide coiled area that the pin articulates on, and the body connects at the center and runs downward with a dramatic arched shape. Along the body are three ridges with notches, it ends with an upward pointing bulb-shaped foot. The pin latch attaches below the foot, a square shape with a curved edge for the sharp pin to rest. The fibula was a popular accessory to pin a cloak at the shoulder, and like this piece, served as a practical, yet simultaneously ornate symbol of one's status or wealth. Furthermore, the crossbow shape became a standard insignia of Roman soldiers. A beautiful example of ancient Roman military style! Size: 3.125" L x 1.5" H (7.9 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA acquired prior to 2013; ex-private Michigan, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
