Roman Bronze Figure of Mars
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze figure of Mars (Greek Ares), the god of warfare and a guardian of agriculture. The standing deity wears a form-fitting cuirass with a striated lower periphery and holds a petite circular shield in one hand; the other hand is raised as if holding an attribute. His raised head features ovoid eyes, a petite nose, and a tapered mandible, and his neo-Attic helmet has a feathered crest projecting from the top. Fine patina envelops the entire figure in hues of green and brown. Size: 1.8" W x 3.9" H (4.6 cm x 9.9 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: estate of Roy Green, Birmingham, Alabama, USA aquired prior to 2013
