Roman Bronze Finial / Furniture Attachment - Silenus

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $600**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming cast bronze finial, probably used to decorate a piece of furniture or a drinking vessel. It is in the form of a head with a wide, disc-shaped rim; the back of the head is hollow, with a thick pin-like extension on its interior so that the finial could be attached to something. The head is in the form of Silenus, the tutor of Dionysus, always depicted as an older man with a large, full beard. The consumption of wine was an important social ritual in Roman society and Silenus is a popular figure whose likeness signified the owner's affiliation with the cult of Dionysus. Size: 1.2" W x 1" H (3 cm x 2.5 cm); 2.95" H (7.5 cm) on included custom stand.
