Roman Bust of Young Commodus
Late 2nd century AD. A draped bronze bust, possibly depicting young Commodus (176-192 AD), hollow-formed and fitted with a lower insertion pin; mounted on a custom-made display stand. See for a similar imperial bust of the Marcus Aurelius family from Pannonia in Beutler, F., Farka, C., Gugl, C., Humer, F., Kremer, G., Polhammer, E. (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, p.169, item 20. 39 grams total, 63mm including stand (2 1/2"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The small bust was probably part of a decoration for a bronze plate, or from an item of furniture on which all the busts of the Imperial family were possibly inserted.
