Roman Carnelian Bead Necklace

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fabulous and wearable necklace composed of dozens of vermilion-hued carnelian beads with faint citrine inclusions. The beads are carved in cylindrical, seed, conical, rectangular, discoid, and triangular forms, and the central ovoid pendant has a beveled edge that may have fit into a ring bezel at one time. Strung in modern times and capped with a silver-plated loop and lobster clasp combo, this is a wonderful example of ancient art meets modern fashion! Size (necklace): 23" L (58.4 cm); (pendant): 0.5" W x 0.625" H (1.3 cm x 1.6 cm)

Provenance: private Dunn collection, Coral Springs, Florida, USA, acquired in the 1990s

Condition Report: Carnelian beads are ancient, and stringing and silver-plated components are modern. Minor nicks and abrasions to some carnelian beads, otherwise intact and very good. Light patina throughout. Lovely and wearable.
