Roman Empire - Julia Paula, Augusta, AD 219-220. Silver denarius (20 mm, 2. 89 g.) Rome. IVLIA PAVLA AVG, draped bust of Julia Paula to right, her hair bound up at the back. CONCORDIA, Concordia seated left on throne, holding a patera in her right hand, in field to left, star. BMC 172; Cohen 6; RIC 211. A lovely example. Scarce. Julia Cornelia Paula came from a distinguished Romano-Syrian family and seems to have been both attractive and intelligent; she was picked to be the wife of Elagabalus by Julia Maesa, probably in hopes that she might be able to stabilize him. In the end she was unable to control him and was divorced in 220. Please see the photos for a better impression. 16232
