Roman Gilt Cupid Statuette
1st-3rd century AD. A gilt bronze statuette modelled in the round as a putto, nude but for a sash, with detailing to the hair, face and buttocks; irregular plaque to reverse at shoulder height, with two vertical u-section channels crudely representing wings. See comparable figures on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database has been described as satyrs and as the god Mercury; cf. DENO-1271B3 and DEV-F4184C. 13.1 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Found whilst searching with a metal detector in Leicestershire, UK, by Robert Ward.
