Roman Glass Double Unguentarium w/ Bronze Dauber

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful double unguentarium, free-blown from semi-translucent glass of a sage-green hue. The vessel is defined by a wide base, a pair of conjoined cylindrical vessels, and a pair of attached rigaree handles joining rim to midsection. Thin glass trailing courses around the lower body and midsection before terminating beneath the bottoms of the handles, and a fragment of the original bronze dauber is still retained within one of the cylinders. Thick layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence envelop the composition and nicely complement the vessel's soft spring hues. Size: 2.375" W x 4.375" H (6 cm x 11.1 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Stephen Shalom, collection, New York City, New York, USA, 1970s, purchased in Israel
