Roman Glass Ingot - Barrel Form

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely glass ingot with a barrel-shaped body bearing a slight central carination. The flat faces enable it to stand upright unassisted, and petite indentations on either face show how malleable the glass was when first created. Raw glass ingots were essential in creating the exquisite glass works known throughout the Roman Empire. Finer sand made for higher-quality glass, with some of the best glass ingots originating in what is now Cologne, Germany. This ingot is covered in fiery layers of rainbow-hued iridescence which nicely complement the dark hues of the glass. Size: 2.6" W x 4.3" H (6.6 cm x 10.9 cm)

Provenance: private NYC, NY collection, East Coast, USA assembled between 1970 and 2000.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to recent increases of shipments being seized by Australian & German customs (even for items with pre-UNESCO provenance), we will no longer ship most antiquities and ancient Chinese art to Australia & Germany. For categories of items that are acceptable to ship to Australia or Germany, please contact us directly or work with your local customs brokerage firm.

Display stands not described as included/custom in the item description are for photography purposes only and will not be included with the item upon shipping.
