Roman Glass Unguentaria (Group of 3)
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely ensemble of three free-blown glass vessels known as "unguentaria" (singular unguentarium) used for storing perfumes, balms, or other scented oils. The smallest vessel has a bell-shaped lower body with a concave base, a narrow neck, and an in-folded rim. The second vessel exhibits an elongated drop-form body with a slender neck. The largest unguentarium has a piriform body, a corseted neck line, and a flared rim. All three vessels have rough pontil scars beneath their respective bases. Size of largest (piriform body): 1.375" W x 3.75" H (3.5 cm x 9.5 cm).
Provenance: ex-Stephen Shalom, collection, New York City, New York, USA, 1970s, purchased in Israel

Condition Report: Largest vessel has losses to rim and a few stable pressure fissures to body as shown. All items have minor abrasions to bodies, necks, and rims, with light encrustations primarily within the interior cavities, and minor micro-bubbling within glass matrices. A rough pontil scar indicates the vessels were formed by hand. Light earthen deposits throughout.
