Roman Holy Land Redware Oil Lamp - Planta Pedis

Roman, Roman Holy Land, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A petite mold-made terracotta oil lamp. It has a ring base with a shallow and illegible planta pedis (maker's mark), smooth walls with an incised design underneath the tab-shaped handle, rounded shoulders with a repeating linear motif, a recessed tondo with a thick border rim, and a nubbin-shaped wick spout. A light orange-red hue covers the exterior surfaces. Size: 3.5" L (8.9 cm).

Provenance: private Schroeder collection, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, acquired before 1970; purportedly found in Turkey
