Roman Iron Adze Head

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A forged-iron adze head meant to till and move earth for a variety of reasons. The spade-shaped tool features a triangular head with a sharpened edge, a recessed triangular groove beneath the head for added pole bracing, and a pair of folded lateral flanged for holding the head of a thick wooden shaft. Adzes have played a pivotal role in agricultural and utilitarian tasks for cultures across the ancient world, and a Roman version is no less important! Size: 6.3" L x 3.4" W (16 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Slight bending to overall form of head and flanges, with light encrustations and pitting, and oxidation commensurate with age, otherwise intact and very good. Great iron patina and light earthen deposits throughout.
