Roman Marble Draped Figure - Actor or Philosopher

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A finely carved white marble sculpture of the draped male astutely holding his right hand over his chest. This is scrupulously delineated with the figure's thumb pointed upward toward his head (now missing) and his other fingers veristically wrapped around the drapery. This pose also suggests that the subject may represent an actor, a philosopher, or fellow paying respect to his leader. The figure is depicted in the round, with the folds of his flowing tunic and toga delicately rendered and enveloping his body, even accentuating the paunch of his abdominal region. He stands in contrapposto with the right knee bent and the voluminous folds of his garments cascading across his body. A fascinating figure, sculpted with the utmost sensitivity and skill. Size: 8.75" W x 19.25" H (22.2 cm x 48.9 cm); 22.25" H (56.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private Upper West Side, New York, New York, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149158
Condition Report: A section from a larger sculpture, but a nice representation. Expected surface wear with abrasions and chips/losses to high-pointed areas such as the fingers, knee, and drapery folds commensurate with age. Scattered deposits throughout.
