Roman Marble Head of a Goddess
2nd-3rd century AD. A carved marble head of Venus(?) (Greek Aphrodite) with detailed chignon hairstyle drawn back from the face with braid extending towards the left shoulder, diadem with chamfered rim and red pigment; the head turned slightly to the left with wide eyes and small lips bearing red pigment; architectural bracket to the rear developing from the chignon. 6.2 kg, 25.5cm (10"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired on the UK art market; formerly held in a private collection formed in the early 1990s.
