Roman Marble Head of a Nobleman
Late 2nd century AD. A marble bust of a male with hair swept up from the brow in a series of locks; lightly engraved eyebrows, moustache and short beard; roughly carved to the back of the head for fitting into a niche; mounted on a custom-made stand. 19.3 kg total, 45cm including stand (17 3/4"). Property of a gentleman living in central London; previously in the Alder family collection, Lausanne, Switzerland; acquired before 1952.
