LOT 0094

Roman / Near Eastern Marble Bust

[ translate ]

Roman or Near Eastern, ca. late 1st millennium to early 2nd century CE. A hand-carved marble bust of an ambiguous presentation with broad shoulders, a rounded base, and a corseted neckline, surmounted by an enlarged head. The faded countenance is composed of deep-set eyes, a broad nose with slightly flared nostrils, a rounded chin, and a petite indentation where the mouth should be, all beneath a bald top that exhibits a smooth texture. Marble busts were carved throughout the Roman Empire as well as the ancient Near East, and the fluid stylistic tendencies for cultures in the ancient Near East meant that many cultures - including the Romans to the west - created sculptural busts like this example. The original striations markings are still visible across the composition. Size: 3.25" W x 6.6" H (8.3 cm x 16.8 cm); 7.4" H (18.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#145856
