Roman Pottery Oil Lamp w/ Abstract Zoomorph

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed pottery oil lamp featuring an abstract reptilian zoomorph within the recessed tondo. The lamp features a flat base with a planta pedis reading "MNOVIVS I," a circular body, a pierced handle, and a semicircular wick spout protruding off the front of the tondo. The mesmerizing creature has impressed striations indicative of scales as well as a scaly tail and head that terminates in a slender snout. Size: 3.9" L x 2.75" W (9.9 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition Report: Handle repaired from two large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor nicks and encrustations to planta pedis and tondo creature, with light fading to pigmentation in scattered areas. Still, nice preservation to planta pedis and tondo zoomorph.
