Roman Sheet Gold Applique of a Goddess
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delicate, beautiful, sheet gold applique, featuring the relief face and upper body of a goddess with a large, rounded coiffure. She holds some kind of attribute - possibly an animal - in front of her waist. She appears matronly rather than youthful and her clothing is modest and covering, suggesting that she is a mother goddess, and may have been worn by a man or woman seeking her protection. The applique is rectangular, with tiny perforations at each corner so that this could be sewn onto a piece of clothing and provide protection to the wearer. Size: 0.6" W x 1.05" H (1.5 cm x 2.7 cm); weight: 1.1 grams
Provenance: private Alabama, USA collection; ex-Roy Green collection aquired prior to 2013
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
