Romano-Egyptian Terracotta Harpocrates, ex-Royal Athena

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-formed terracotta figure of Harpocrates, the child god of silence and secrets, presenting in flowing garments while holding a cobra in his left hand. Harpocrates raises his right hand to his mouth in a childlike manner, a gesture used to depict keeping secrets, and atop his head is a headdress reminiscent of that worn by his mother, the goddess Isis. Thick remains of white pigment visible across the obverse allude to how colorful this figure was when first made. Size: 4" W x 5.625" H (10.2 cm x 14.3 cm)

Condition Report: Abrasions, nicks, and softening to some finer details commensurate with age, with wear and chipping to remaining white pigment, and light earthen deposits, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to form, and nice remains of white pigment across obverse. Previous inventory label on bottom of verso.
