Ross Richmond (American, b.1971)

"Ross Richmond discovered glass in 1991 during his time at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he received a BFA in glass, with a minor in metals. He is considered one of the top glass sculptors in the field today, and has worked with (and for) some of the greatest glass and non-glass artists, including William Morris, Jane Rosen, Preston Singletary, KeKe Cribbs, and Dale Chihuly. Richmond studied and taught at the The Studio, Penland School of Craft and the Pilchuck Glass School. He began working for artist William Morris in 1997, becoming a member of his team in 1999. It was there that he met Randy Walker, his co-resident in an Instructor Collaborative Residency at The Studio in 2016.

William Morris encouraged teamwork and “working outside the box,” Richmond said. Following Morris’ retirement in 2007, Richmond and Walker rented the Pilchuck Glass School during the off season to make their own work until 2014. Last year, they co-taught a class at the Chrysler Museum of Glass and collaborated on a demo piece called Sunset Birch.

With a mutual respect for each other’s work, Richmond and Walker worked together in 2016 for the first time on a body of work that combined both of their strengths of color, form, and the ability to push the boundaries of glass as a material.

Richmond’s work focuses on sculpting realistic figures adorned with color and pattern, while Walker’s work is based in nature. During their residency, they combined these two themes to create figures with colors and objects from nature.

Richmond teaches throughout the U.S. and Canada, and his work has been featured in many exhibitions and galleries in the U.S. He currently resides near Seattle, Washington."
