Royal Doulton Porcelain Plate 1897 Edwardian England

[ translate ]

Antique English Edwardian Royal Doulton hand painted porcelain cabinet dish / plate. Hand painted flowers with fine filigree gold decorations, dated June 1897.

The porcelain mark on the bottom belongs into the 1892-1902 period, the impressed mark “Doulton / 6=97” indicates June 1897. The hand painted Doulton Robert Allen studio mark, eventual artist’s signature, and number are partially unreadable.

Between 1878 and 1882, Henry and James Doulton acquired a major interest in the Pinder Bourne factory in Nile Street, Burlsem and changed the name to Doulton & Company, Burlsem. Robert Allen worked for Royal Doulton at Burslem as a designer from 1870 to 1929, he started when it was still called Pinder Bourne. Robert Allen and artists in his studio were often allocated RA-numbers for their hand-painted wares designed and decorated by them. The RA numbers are mostly hand-written and accompany the standard Doulton marks. Robert Allen hand painted wares were never produced in large quantities and many were never repeated: they are unique artworks.
