Russian icon, late 18th - early 19th century.
Russian icon, late 18th - early 19th century.
"Saint John Baptist.
Tempera on wood.
Measurements: 69 x 30 x 3 cm.
The iconography of Saint John the Baptist underwent notable changes in Greek Orthodox art. In Byzantine art he was initially represented as an angel with large wings, and later with his head cut off in allusion to his death at the hands of Herod, through Salome. In this icon, however, the Baptist has been characterized as a beardless man wrapped in a humble mantle and tunic, carrying a scroll or phylactery in one hand.
