Title within elaborate architecture border printed in red and black and partially coloured in red (variant with text in red under the woodcut vignette: “Venundan tur in aedibus Ascensianis”, woodcut vignette within title signed CP, woodcut initials, some of large format and historiated.

19th century brown full calf, somewhat worn, blindtooled frames and decorations, gilt inner dentelles, endpapers and inside of boards of marbled papergilt and blindtooled spine in five compartments, greenspeckled edges. Title reinforced in the margins, fol. 178-182 steam-stained in lower outer corner and partly outer margin. Some old marginal annotations and underlinings.

Editio princeps (first printing of the printed Saxo edition) was printed in Paris in 1514. “The edition of Saxo's History of Denmark by Christiern Pedersen is extremely important because no complete manuscript of Saxo's work is preserved; only a few odd leaves have a chance come down to us. Pedersen's edition is indeed our only source to Saxo's history”.

Provenance: Sven Borgström was born in Malmö in 1927 and worked as a chemist in Stockholm, Malmö and Lund. His fine library, which was built up over many years, consists mainly of older books dated from the 16th century to the late 18th century. His book-collecting began, as it perhaps should, with an incunabula. Borgström's interests included printers, book bindings, book illustrations, and he was interested in history, travel and maps. As a result of previous coin collecting, the subject of numismatics was also of interest in his library. Sven Borgström died 95 years old.Show more
