U.S. Diplomat uniform coat, c.1850, black cloth, the inside with gold color cloth over white lining, the collar and sleeve ends with heavy silver foliate braiding, the coat retaining five front buttons and two tail buttons, each button with thirteen stars above an eagle facing right, a shield at the eagles breast, arrows held in its' left talon, the buttons back marked "L.C.B., Paris," the body of the coat is one cut piece with the sleeves being hand sewn to the coat body, inner cloths are partially present but deteriorated and continue to fall apart when coat is moved *Notes: The above suggested date of this uniform is based upon a notation by the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training: "In 1853 Secretary of State William L. A similar button, with fifteen stars, is shown in "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons," Alphaeus S. Albert, 2006, SCA Publications, 2006, Official and Diplomatic Service, pages 298, 299, button #23. Button #23 is also with eagle facing right, shield at eagle breast, arrows at left talon, and back marked Paris by a different maker (Albert states: "Secretary to American Legation at the Court of Napoleon III").* Start Price: $300.00
