Sumptuous Large Tabletop Still Life of Fruit with Champagne Bottle and Flute, white porcelain openwork compote of raspberries, scattered grapes, peaches, apples, peeled lemon and sliced melon, oil on canvas, unsigned, housed in a magnificent deep cove gilt gesso frame, OS: 37 1/2" x 47 1/2", SS: 29" x 39". Cleaned and relined, fine overall craquelure.Roesen was born in Boppard-am-Rhein, Prussia, fled Germany during the peasant revolts of 1848. Apparently self-taught, he opened his studio in Philadelphia. His work was modeled after 17th-18th c. Dutch painting. Provenance: From a Private Collection.
