The letter, thanking for his help arranging work for a girl entrusted to Sherman's guardianship. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo, "Headquarters Army of the United States" stationery, ruled paper, written on a folded sheet; horizontal folds, faint offsetting. With the original envelope. The note, to both Hawley and his own brother John Sherman, written on verso of his printed visiting card: "See Rachel & her Lady Friend." 1 page, 2 1/4x3 1/2 inches; faint scattered soiling. "It is really a relief to her, as I am responsible for her expenses, & have about as much as I can carry now. Tell the head of the office in which you place her that she is committed by her sister Mrs. Moreland of Mobile to my guardianship . . . ."
