An early example of the stool can be seen on a silver denarius from the British Museum (acc. no. 1860,0602.139), minted between 15-13 B.C., with the reverse showing Augustus seated on a folding stool receiving olive branches from soldiers. Another silver denarius (British Museum acc. no. 1860,0330.33) depicts Constantia seated on a folding stool.
