SONGYE COMMUNITY POWER FIGURE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Wood, Olive Baboon (Papio anubis) hide and teeth, Rock Monitor (Varanus albigularis) skin, copper, beads, fiber
Height: 29 ¼ in (74.3 cm)

Condition Report:
Good condition for an object of this age and type. Age cracks in places, including to the proper left side of the head, just in front of the ear, to the torso, in front of the proper left hand, and to the proper right leg and proper right side of the base. Some insect damage at the waist. A large but stable cavity of insect damage beneath the proper left foot and insect damage below the proper right heel. Dents, slight bending, and oxidation to the applied metal. The hide attached to the head is dry and fragile in places, with losses. Some shallow saw marks to the neck in a few places, none going completely round, with some fill. Some minor insect damage to the neck. Minor marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, and small losses in places to the figure and accoutrements. Fine aged patina with some signs of European finish. Freestanding.
