SONGYE MASK, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
Wood, fiber
Height: 13 in (33 cm)
Condition Report:
Very good condition overall for an object of this age and type with wear consistent with age and use. Two losses on either side of the rim on the reverse at approximately the level of the mouth, as partially visible in the catalogue illustrations. An old shallow linear dent to the proper right eye, as visible in the catalogue illustrations. Minor age cracks to the top of the head. Additional chips and small losses around the rim on the reverse of the mask; some other small nicks, chips, scratches, and abrasions in places. Old c-shaped chip/loss to the upper rim on the proper right side; break is beneath the fiber attachments. Exceptionally fine layered, aged patina, with encrusted white pigment (probably reapplied in places) and softly glossy black and red pigments, with rubbed wear from handling and use. Fiber attachments are dry and fragile with some breaks. Has stand.
