Statuette-Pendant depicting Saint Anthony of Padua, also named Toni Malau Kongo, Democratic Republic of Congo. 19th century or older. Bronze. Height: 11 cm; Width: 4. 5 cm; Depth: 5. 5 cm. It represents Saint Anthony of Padua, in a Franciscan dress, holding in his left arm Jesus the child and a cross in his right hand. The bronze, pierced at the base, was cast following the cire perdue (lost wax) technique. There is a ring on the back, to suspend it as a pendant. This figurine refers to the first contacts with the Europeans and Christianity. Toni Malau is also spelled Ntoni Malawu. In the book of Raphaël Batsîkama ba Mampuya ma Ndâwla, L'ancien royaume du Congo et les Bakongo, we can read the following words about Saint Anthony among the Kongo: “Why Saint Anthony? He was the most popular saint of the country. Each dwelling had its “own Ntoni Malawu fetish” (Anthony of good luck) , just like this one. . . (. . .) Let’s say, parenthetically, that at that time, Saint Anthony was named “Ntoni Malawu” throughout the country: the Saint of Prosperity, this meaning in such moments of ruins is evident”.
