Statuette depicting the Virgin Mary, named Nsundi Malau Kongo, Democratic Republic of Congo. 19th century or older. Bronze. Height: 12 cm; Width: 5 cm; Depth: 4 cm. It represents the Virgin Mary, the hands in prayer, entirely draped. The eyes in the form of coffee beans were carved on an oval face. The bronze, pierced at the base, was cast following the cire perdue (lost wax) technique. The word Malau, which we can also often read under the spelling Malawu, refers to good luck. These statuettes refer to the Ancestor-Mother cult.
