Saint Augustine enthroned with Saint Anthony Abbot and another saint, Andrea Previtali
Property of the Previtali Family Collection
Andrea Previtali
Berbenno near Bergamo circa 1480 - 1528 Bergamo
Saint Augustine enthroned with Saint Anthony Abbot and another saint
oil on canvas
canvas: 13 by 14¾ in.; 33 by 37.5 cm.
framed: 18⅝ by 20⅝ in.; 47.3 by 52.4 cm.
Condition Report:
The canvas is stable on its stretcher. The painting seems to have been transferred from panel to canvas at some point in the early 20th century. The work has not been restored in quite some time, and much of the original paint surface remains, though some of it has lost some definition over time. The painting reads relatively strongly despite being beneath an old, discolored and dirty varnish that has dulled with age. There are some scattered losses to the paint surface, as visible in the image, some of which should be stabilized. Some faint but stable spots of lifting can be seen in raking light, and a faint pattern of craquelure is visible on some of the surface. Some frame abrasion is at the extreme edges. Inspection under UV reveals a milky varnish and a few spots of retouching that have also discolored and are visible to the naked eye, including a spot in the red background to the right of Saint Augustine's staff. This painting would likely benefit from sensitive and careful restoration. Offered in a decoratively carved gilt wood frame.
