Publisher : Pierre Argillet (Éditions de Berggruen / Argillet)EA- "épreuve d'artiste," (artist's trial or artist's proof) means , a given print is part of a limited edition that is not part of a standard numbered edition. These types of prints are considered rare, their number is limited and therefore more expensive than the current edition. Prints with the EA signature are intended for the artist. The painting "Les chevaux surrealistes" was the set design for the ballet "Mad Tristan" staged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1944.year.The work, also known as "Tristan fou" (Mad Tristan), refers to one of the key motifs in the legend. It refers to the moment when Tristan falls into madness out of despair and love for Isolde. In the myth, Tristan and Isolde accidentally drank a magic love potion that bound them forever, even though Isolde was to marry Tristan's uncle, King Mark. Their forbidden love leads to suffering and betrayal. When Tristan is banished, he sinks into madness and despair, believing that he will never be with Isolde again.Dali's painting is a visual interpretation of this very condition. The horses' heads with bricks on their mouths symbolize repressed, trapped passion and love. Dali often used the symbolism of horses to represent passion and freedom. But in this case, the blocked mouths and fragmentation may indicate suppressed energy and unbridled madness. The setting shown in the visuals is for illustrative purposes only and does not constitute a commercial offer.
