Sambodja (b. Purworejo, C. Java, 1931) Standing Woman

Sambodja contrasted the beautiful woman he presents centrally dressed in a rose kebaya in this painting with the grotesque figure of Durga which he depicts behind her. While by so doing he emphasizes the beauty of the main figure, the figure of Durga acts as a kind of memento mori, in this case, it serves as a reminder to the woman portrayed in the photograph and its viewers, that beauty is only skin deep, it is what lies within it, that really matters
