This early oil is distinguished by having been chosen by The Fine Art Society for exhibition. The artist has re-used a canvas as evidenced by old pin holes on the back showing that it was once on a larger stretcher. Birch has used oil washes to create Solemnity. We judge that it has been cleaned but under uv light we can see no evidence of over-painting, close examination reveals a slight craquelure where less fluid pigment has been used.
