He is one of the most important members of the Italian Transavanguardia movement (also known in Europe under the name of Neo-Expressionism) with Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Paladino, Nicola De Maria and Enzo Cucchi. The movement was founded by critic Achille Bonito Oliva and had its peak in the eighties. Sandro Chia has a very heterogeneous artistic background. In 1969 he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, where he came into contact with the main European and later American neo-avant-gardes; he moved to Rome for a decade and then to New York for about twenty years. In the late seventies, after various travel experiences in Asia and Europe, he converted to representational art and naturally and automatically entered the Transavanguardia movement. He exhibited at the Paris Biennale, at the São Paulo Art Biennial and in several editions of the Venice Biennale. His works can be found in the major international museums, such as Mo. Ma (New York) , Tate Gallery (London) , Fukujama (Japan) , Tel Aviv Museum of Art (Israel) , Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin) . This work is part of a beautiful portfolio of aquatint etchings on Etna 400 g paper from 1999, masterfully mounted on a white lacquered frame handcrafted in Tuscany.
