Scarce Aluminum Orvis Patent Trout Reel in Box

A third version of the famed Orvis 1874 patent reel with screwed construction and removable oil cap, and most remarkably, made of aluminum. Several changes took place from the second version to the third, including the placement of the click, now placed on the back wall of the spool and the back plate of the reel. The markings were also modified, now reading "C.F. Orvis, Maker - Patented - Manchester, VT", as was the foot placement, now resting at the base of the two bottom pillars. Marked with a number "26" between the foot pillars, possibly a serial number. With 2 7/8' diameter side plates and working click, a scarce reel made more desirable with the addition of the original 2pc cardboard box, stamped "Aluminum". With one lid flap having separated seams, and moderate water staining, it is still a rare and desirable box, more elusive than the reel.
