Young.” 1850 map from an early 1855 edition of the Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler New Universal Atlas. Maps by Cowperthwait, Desilver and Butler are much less common than either Cowperthwait or Mitchell maps of that era. Shows information for eastern and western portions of the state. Eastern region filled with towns, rivers, roads and information on existing and planned railroad lines. The western parts depict larger counties, plus notes on Indian tribes, forts, topography, trails, and water holes. Inset map of the northern panhandle, and the vicinity of Galveston City. Notes included on geographic features, plus table of population with very interesting information. A fascinating and decorative map from an important period of Texas history. Light water stain at bottom edge of paper. Pea-size spot in lower right image area. Two small and light spots in Galveston inset. Tiny sulfide spot in bottom margin. Shallow stain at upper left edge (1/8” deep). Light and small foxing mark at top center of image. Most of these imperfections will not show when matted. 13 x 16.
