Shango sceptre - YORUBA - Nigeria. H. 52 cm. Ancient ceremonial sceptre representing a figure topped by an axe with a stylised double blade, symbol of the Shango, the god of war and thunder. The axe is beautifully decorated on both sides. The bottom of the sceptre was damaged by xylophagous insects. Placed on a stand. Around 1930.
