Very large and beautiful sculpture, 54 cm high! An impressive carved and painted wooden temple figure from the Qing Dynasty, featuring the Chinese god of war Guandi, from the early 18th century. This finely carved figure is covered in layers of detailed textures, patterns and decorations and is most notable for the expertly rendered folds in its robe. It still has some of its original gilded and lacquered finish. The face is very beautiful and well executed. Guandi is the deified persona of Guan Yu, a character in the historical legend of the Three Kingdoms, who was worshipped as early as the Sui Dynasty and officially canonised as the God of War.
