Sculpture - Sandstone - A large and Rare steel of surya - western india - Medieval India (1206-1526)

Description LARGE STONE IN GRAY SANDSTONE representing the brahmanic god of the sun, Sûrya, standing, in hieratic frontal position , holding in his hands two lotus flowers, its attributes, which rise on each side. Surya appears both in figure sculpture and on temples across India. Here He is as often portrayed wearing tall boots and a flowing tunic which represent his coming from another world (Parthian or Kushan?) . This unusual iconography continues right up to the 12th century CE In this representation Surya is ornamented at the top with a pair of flying Vidhyadhara. Adorned with jewelry and wearing a tall tapered tiara, he is crowned with a radiant sun. At his feet before him, a female deity appears, the principal of his four wives, Prabha, the Light. On the left and right of the feet of the god, appear deities and characters. On the left we think it is possible that it could be pingala and on the right of Dantin. Datation End of 11th century - Early 12th century Condition Global excellent conditions wih lacks adn restorations visible on pictures Please check all detail pictures Provenance Collection constituted by Mrs. L. and Mr. B. former ambassador of Unesco in India in office in the years 1960 to 1970.
