CHINA - MING PERIOD (1368-1644) - 16th century Buddha statue in terracotta with green, yellow and orange enamel, with two characters holding a flask. When it comes to iconography, this work does not really depict Buddha as the latter is never represented this way. This work is a Chinese representation. In English, he is called "happy man" to underline the happy nature of the character. It is believed that this work represents a famous ch'an bronze named Pu-tai. How to explain such a representation? Chinese received Buddhism from India. In a great many ways, his philosophy is at odds with Chinese customs. For example, celibacy, the giving up of material goods, the giving up of family, the begging life, the indifference to sensual and social pleasures.
