Son of Giovanni Oriòl, silk weaver, and Geltrude Bugugnà. He studied as a cleric with the Cappellani Beneficiati of his parish. He combined religious life with his studies, receiving the tonsure and the first two minor orders at the age of 19 and the other two at 20. In 1674 he graduated in theology from the University of Barcelona. He became a priest in 1676 and entered service as a tutor in the house of Don Tommaso Gasnèri. In 1685, after the death of his mother, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where, after 9 months, Pope Innocent XI gave him the benefit on the Chapel of San Leopardo of the Church of Nuestra Señora del Pino.
