\Artist: Scuola Lombarda del XVII secolo, seguace di Camillo Procaccini
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 73_57_5_cm
Pair of antique paintings, from the 17th century, oil on canvas, depicting “Riposo durante la fuga in Egitto e la Visitazione. ” The paintings are attributed to an artist from the Lombard area, active during the first part of the 17th century. An analysis of the draft highlights the use of pigments and refined pieces, evoking and finding comparison with the similar compositions of Camillo Procaccini (1561-1629) and Carlo Antonio Procaccini (1571 -1630) . “Riposo durante la fuga in Egitto” takes after an engraving by Camillo Procaccini himself, dated 1593 and of which we know a copy in counterpart of an unknown author and three other brush versions: An oil on canvas, assigned to a follower of Camillo Procaccini (Asta Della Rocca, Turin, 9/2/2015) , an oil on copper, which takes after the engraving in counterpart with the landscape amplified and attributed to Denijs Calvaert (Prague, 14/09/2019, Galerie Arcimboldo) and subsequently attributed to Carlo Antonio Procaccini and an oil on canvas, also derived from the engraving in counterpart and with the landscape amplified, assigned to Giovanni Ghisolfi (Asta Wannenes, Genoa, 9/5/2014) , who worked on the decoration of Palazzo Arese Borromeo in Cesano Maderno together with Ercole Procaccini the Younger, son, student and collaborator of Carlo Antonio Procaccini. The themes of the Visitation and Rest in Egypt were frequently addressed by the prolific family workshop of the Procaccinis, able to replicate and vary the inventions of Camillo to meet the growing demand of numerous centres in Lombardy and northern Italy, in which Carlo Antonio also actively collaborated, while starting a production of paintings of limited size, depicting sacred scenes characterized by the insertion of landscapes of exquisitely Nordic taste, in the wake of the appreciation received by the views of Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel. Framed in beautiful antique frames, with slight flaws. In fairly good overall condition considering the age of the paintings. In patina, with some scattered restorations and slight peeling of the surface, but nothing truly relevant. The original canvases have not been relined and do not seem to need any intervention. Fine craquelure consistent with the painting’s age. The stretchers seem not to have been replaced and therefore appear coeval to the canvases. Paintings size: 64 x 47 cm each. - Frames size: 73 x 57 cm each. With photographic certificate of authenticity, in accordance with the current law. Shipping via insured express courier, packaged with the utmost care.
